Connecting students through portraits Select country: All

Photographer Henny Boogert has been working on an extensive series of students in their rooms since 2005. What started out of curiosity has now become a global and significant time document. The photographer traveled to areas where studying is not so obvious or as financially accessible as in The Netherlands.

He portrayed and interviewed students all over the world, in Kenya, Russia, Moldova, Cuba, Bolivia, the Philippines, India and in Europe Italy, Germany and The Netherlands. His work, to been seen on this website, is part of an international exhibition and project to monitor the resemblances and differences of student conditions in a global perspective. Our goal is to connect as many students as possible and to realize as many portraits of 'world' students as possible.

Look at the portraits

Students throughout the world fight for the same ideal: to move forward, to make a career. As universal as this aim is, as universal is their housing usually consisting of a bed, a small seating area, some posters on the wall and clutter on the ground. Another resemblance is: parents in many countries put away any extra money to finance the education of at least one of their children. They are often supported by siblings, uncles and aunts. And then that dream to move forward, to have a career, becomes a dream of more persons than just that one student on the photo. The portraits are also exhibited at many universities, academies and public libraries throughout The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. See our Local exhibitions page to find out where the exhibition and project is being organized.

Connect to the students

With this project we aim to bring Western students in touch with 'world students' as an inspirational factor. Visitors of our website and the exhibition can communicate easily with most of the portrayed students from other parts of the globe: just click the Facebook-button or visit our Facebook page. It is our aim to bring students all over the world together to get inspired by each other and to reflect on resemblances and differences. In this way we hope to broaden the horizons of students.

Discover local projects

Via the exhibition and this website students are challenged to support projects that improve opportunities and education for young people in developing countries. Maybe some of them will get motivated to study abroad, follow an internship or do volunteer work. You can use our Student projects page to look at some projects and find out what YOU can do. Or just go to our Support us page to donate or become active as a volunteer.
